IMS in Action: Sharing Science with Everyone, from Schools to the General Public

The start of the 2025 academic year was marked by a strong commitment to science outreach. The IMS Laboratory teams took part in several events dedicated to both the general public and school audiences, sharing their passion, explaining their research, and sparking curiosity among the next generations. Here’s a look back at three highlights — La Nuit de la Recherche, La Fête de la Science, and Le Circuit Scientifique — a successful mix of interactive workshops, dialogue, and educational innovation.

Nuit de la Recherche 2025

Every year, La Nuit de la Recherche (Night of Research) invites the public to meet scientists for an evening of engaging and original activities that make research accessible to everyone.

On September 26, 2025, IMS teams offered visitors a hands-on glimpse into their daily work through a series of interactive and creative workshops.
The research that was presented focused on several European collaborative projects, including:

  • The RadioSpin Project — led by Sylvain Saïghi — exploring bio-inspired artificial intelligence and the design of ultra-low-power systems that could one day rival the brain’s efficiency;
  • The ETAIN Project — led by Isabelle Lagroye — studying bio-electromagnetism and investigating the potential effects of 5G on health using cellular and animal models;
  • The SWEATPATCH and CanDoIt-MSCA Projects — led by Hamida Hallil — developing smart biosensors capable of detecting early signs of disease or environmental pollution.

A warm thank-you to Cap Sciences for hosting the event and to the CNRS Aquitaine Delegation for their continued support.

La Nuit de la Recherche 2025 was organized by Cap Sciences, the University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux Montaigne University, CNRS, Inria Bordeaux University Center, INRAE Nouvelle-Aquitaine Bordeaux, Inserm, Bordeaux INP, ENSAM, and Arts et Métiers.
The event received support from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, Bordeaux Métropole, the French National Research Agency (ANR), and the “Science with and for Society” label.

It was in partnership with Radio Campus Bordeaux, Dealers de Science, and the Croc en Jambe collective.

Fête de la Science 2025

For over 30 years, La Fête de la Science (Science Festival) has celebrated science, technology, and innovation by fostering dialogue between scientists and citizens, in France and beyond.
Initiated by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the 2025 edition took place from October 3 to 13 on the theme “Intelligence(s)”.

As part of this initiative, Emilie Puginier Pinet and Nina Reitano Ferber met with CE1 and CM1 pupils (2nd and 4th grade) to discuss the scientific method through a hands-on bridge-building activity.
The session also provided an opportunity for the researchers to share their professional journeys and highlight the diversity of careers in science.

Beyond the knowledge shared, this encounter offered a positive representation of women in science — an essential step in encouraging young girls to consider scientific studies in a still largely male-dominated field.

This outreach activity was supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region.

Circuit Scientifique 2025

The Circuit Scientifique (Scientific Circuit) gives middle and high school students from the Bordeaux Academy the opportunity to discover science in a different way, through direct exchanges with researchers in their laboratories.

For the 2025 edition, held from October 6 to 10, IMS welcomed two classes for workshops combining chemistry, biology, electronics, and artificial intelligence.
Guided by Hamida Hallil, Nicolas Breard, Shreyas Deshpande, Annesha Mazumder, and Marin Gerard, the students took part in various interactive experiments to:

  • discover connected beehives that monitor bee health;
  • understand how waves travel through materials and the principles of wireless communication;
  • compare the human perception of smells with the readings of high-precision gas sensors;
  • investigate liquid properties and understand microfluidics.

The Circuit Scientifique is jointly organized by CNRS and the University of Bordeaux, labeled “Science with and for Society” since 2022.
It is supported by several co-organizers: INRAE Nouvelle-Aquitaine Bordeaux, Bordeaux INP, CEA, Inria Bordeaux University Center, Inserm, Bordeaux Montaigne University, Arts et Métiers, and the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (UPPA), in partnership with the Rectorship of the Bordeaux Academy and Cap Sciences.

Circuit Scientifique hors les murs

The Circuit Scientifique also extends beyond the lab walls, bringing science directly into classrooms across the Bordeaux Academy.

For this second edition, the IMS Laboratory traveled to Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne to meet students where they are.

Hélène Debéda led a discovery session titled “Printed and Embedded Electronics: A Step Toward the Autonomy of Connected Sensors”. Through four hands-on workshops, high-school students explored practical and applied electronics, using components and (micro)systems developed during internships, practical work, PhDs, or ongoing research projects at IMS.

Meanwhile, Vincent Robin co-hosted a junior version of La Fresque du Climat (Climate Fresk) for middle schoolers: an interactive and collaborative workshop helping them understand the mechanisms and consequences of climate change, and reflect on actionable solutions for a sustainable future.

A strong commitment

Through these three key initiatives, the IMS Laboratory reaffirmed its commitment to making science accessible, engaging, and inspiring — from young students to the general public, from playful experimentation to thoughtful awareness.
Each event offered a behind-the-scenes look at research, showcased scientists’ diverse paths, and planted seeds of curiosity for the future.

Many thanks to all IMS researchers, doctoral candidates, and trainees for their essential contributions to science outreach and knowledge sharing.
