THESIS DEFENSE of Zeeshan ALI - December 18, 2025

Zeeshan ALI will defend his thesis on December 18, 2025 at 2:00 pm in the amphitheater JP. DOM of the IMS Laboratory, on the subject: “System Engineering Approach to the Development of Urban Digital Twin”.

This thesis is a small part of a large-scale project called ACT. The ACT project aims to transform the University of Bordeaux (UB) into a living laboratory and incubator for experimental projects to achieve socio-environmental transitions by engaging the community, multidisciplinary expertise, and external stakeholders. For this purpose, there is a need for a scientific tool in the urban ecosystem settings of the UB and Urban Digital Twin Twin (UDT) can respond to it. In fact, the conceptual value of UDTs is well recognized, but the practical engineering for building them is often underexplored, particularly regarding their multi-scale and multi-perspective nature. For this reason, our contribution focused on the real-world application of Digital Twin Engineering in the urban ecosystem settings of the UB. We integrated data, model, and service driven perspectives to twin the dynamic urban system. We leveraged multi-source data of multiple urban perspectives and multi-modeling appeach to create a scalable platform that addresses the phenomena of mobility and energy at various scale of urban ecosystem. As well as to provide the services of monitoring, prediction and what-if scenario exploration at those scales. In addition, the UDT of UB enable the integration of different stakeholders namely human-in-the-loop and human-off-the-loop at different levels. The UB’s UDT act as a test bench that allows to monitor, predict and explore various scenarios in the urban settings of the university. Overall, this study provides a holistic understanding towards the creation of multi-scale and multi-perspective UDTs.
