THESIS DEFENSE of Estevan TU - June 10, 2026

Estevan TU will defend his thesis on June 10, 2026 at 10:00 am in the amphitheater JP DOM of the IMS Laboratory, on the subject: “High Q Reference Oscillator for High Performance Radar Waveform Generator”.

This thesis focuses on the design of low phase noise, low-power BAW-based oscillators in 28 nm CMOS for FMCW radar applications. It begins by addressing key challenges and reviewing BAW technology, RF CMOS transistor behavior, and noise mechanisms. Advanced phase noise models such as Leeson’s equation, ISF, and PPV are used to guide the design methodology. Two oscillator topologies, cross-coupled and Colpitts, are implemented using gm/ID-based sizing for optimized performance. Fabricated designs operate at ~2.41 GHz with power consumption below 2 mW. The PMOS Colpitts oscillator achieves -133.8 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and -159.4 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset, with FoMs of 220.1 dB and 224.5 dB, demonstrating state-of-the-art performance. These results highlight strong potential for ultra-low noise radar systems
