Abstract : Mobile Internet, The Internet of Things, Cloud Technology, Autonomous and Near-Autonomous Vehicles are among the most disruptive technologies with the highest estimated economic impact in 2025. All of them are strongly related with Future Wireless Networks and Communications, 5G and beyond, and dictated by the needs in terms of high data rate (>1Gb/s) and low latency (<1ms). As a consequence, bandwidth is a severe bottleneck and so future wireless communications are expected to be primarily based on millimetre-wave radio links.
This talk highlights some of the most profitable application scenarios for emerging wireless communications in the most widespread mm-wave frequency bands allocated worldwide, and addresses some of the main design challenges for the system-on-chip implementation of mm-wave transceivers enabling next-generation wireless communications, along with some solutions and insights extracted from the research carried out by our group for some of the most critical building blocks, such as pulse generators, low noise amplifiers, oscillators, phase shifters and power amplifiers.
